Historical context

Titus, a member of the Flavian dynasty, served as Roman emperor from AD 79 until his death on 13 September 81. He succeeded his father, Vespasian, becoming the first Roman emperor to succeed his biological father. Titus had previously served as a military commander in Judaea, capturing Jerusalem in AD 70, before later ruling Rome to great acclaim.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver coin is a denarius, which functioned as the standard Roman silver coin from around 211 BC into the third century AD. The obverse features the laureate head of the emperor accompanied by the inscription IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M, whilst the reverse displays a tripod adorned with fillets, flanked by two ravens, beneath a dolphin and a wreath, paired with the legend TR P IX IMP XV COS VIII P P.
