Historical context

Struck at Rome, this bronze sestertius features the obverse legend "IMP T CAES VESP AVG P M TR P P P COS VIII" alongside the laureate head of Titus. During the Roman Empire, the sestertius served as a large coin, originally named for a nominal value of two and a half asses and representing one quarter of a denarius useful for commerce. The reverse bears the inscription "PAX AVGVSTI S C" and depicts Pax standing left with a branch and cornucopiae.
