Historical context

Titus Flavius Vespasianus served as Roman emperor from AD 79 until his death on 13 September 81. A member of the Flavian dynasty, he became the first Roman emperor to succeed his biological father after the death of Vespasian on 23 June 79. During his rule from Rome, Titus oversaw relief efforts following disasters including a major fire in the capital in AD 80.

Struck at Rome, this bronze sestertius features an obverse portrait of Titus with the legend IMP T CAES VESP AVG P M TR P P P COS VIII. The reverse displays the legend PROVIDENT AVGVST S C alongside togate figures of Vespasian and Titus standing together while holding a globe and rudder. In imperial Roman commerce, the sestertius functioned as a large coin valued at one quarter of a denarius, or two and a half asses.
