Historical context

Titus ruled the Roman Empire from AD 79 until his death on 13 September 81, succeeding his father Vespasian as part of the Flavian dynasty. His brief reign included relief efforts following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 and a major fire in Rome in AD 80, alongside the completion of the Colosseum.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze dupondius represents a denomination valued during the empire at two asses, half a sestertius, or one-eighth of a denarius. A dupondius purchased roughly a loaf of bread or a sextarius of wine at the height of the empire. The obverse depicts the emperor wearing a radiate crown, an element introduced under Nero in AD 66 to distinguish dupondii from the similarly sized as and denote double value, accompanied by the legend "IMP T CAES VESP AVG P M TR P COS VIII". The reverse depicts Salus seated holding a patera, framed by the inscription "SALVS AVG S C".
