Historical context

Titus was Roman emperor from AD 79 until his death on 13 September 81. A member of the Flavian dynasty, he was the first Roman emperor to succeed his biological father, Vespasian. Titus had previously served as a military commander in Judaea, capturing Jerusalem in AD 70, and took office following Vespasian's death on 23 June 79, ruling to great acclaim.

This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome under Titus's imperial authority. The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction during the Second Punic War until the third century AD. The obverse features the laureate head of the emperor accompanied by the inscription "IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M". On the reverse, the coin depicts a slow quadriga with a garlanded, round basket-like car holding three corn-ears, enclosed by the imperial titles "TR P VIIII IMP XIIII COS VII P P".
