Historical context
Vespasian founded the Flavian dynasty and ruled as Roman emperor from 69 to 79, bringing stability following the civil wars of the Year of the Four Emperors. Upon his death on 23 June 79, he was succeeded by his son Titus, who ruled until 81 and became the first Roman emperor to succeed his biological father. As emperor, Titus oversaw the deification of his father by the Roman Senate, issuing large brass sestertii at Rome to honour divus Vespasian.
