Historical context

Titus Flavius Vespasianus served as Roman emperor from AD 79 until his death on 13 September 81. A member of the Flavian dynasty, he succeeded his father, Vespasian, becoming the first Roman emperor to succeed his biological father. Following a reign that lasted barely two years, Titus died of a fever and was deified by the Roman Senate, leaving the imperial throne to his younger brother Domitian.

Struck at the Rome mint under Titus's authority, this silver denarius represents the standard Roman silver denomination originally introduced circa 211 BC during the Second Punic War. Rather than depicting the emperor himself, the coin portrays his younger brother Domitian, who is titled on the obverse as "CAESAR DIVI F DOMITIANVS COS VII". The reverse depicts a garlanded and lighted altar flanked by horns, accompanied by the inscription "PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS".
