Historical context
Titus ruled the Roman Empire from AD 79 until his death on 13 September 81. A member of the Flavian dynasty, he succeeded his father, Vespasian, becoming the first Roman emperor to succeed his biological father. During his reign, Titus oversaw relief efforts following the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 and a major fire in Rome in AD 80, where his imperial administration operated.
This silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination originally introduced circa 211 BC during the Second Punic War. Minted at Rome under Titus, the obverse bears the portrait and name of Julia Titi accompanied by the legend "IVLIA AVGVSTA T AVG F". The reverse depicts Venus, naked to the waist and resting an elbow against a column while holding a helmet, inscribed with the legend "VENVS AVG".
