Historical context

Titus, a member of the Flavian dynasty, was Roman emperor from AD 79 until his death on 13 September 81, having succeeded his father, Vespasian. Striking coins at the mint of Rome during his reign, Titus presided over an administration marked by efforts to relieve disasters including a major fire in Rome in AD 80.

This dupondius represents a denomination valued at two asses, equivalent to half of a sestertius or one-eighth of a denarius following the monetary arrangements of Augustus. At the height of the Roman Empire, a loaf of bread or a sextarius of wine cost approximately one dupondius. Produced under the authority of Titus, the obverse bears the portrait and title of Julia Titi, reading "IVLIA IMP T AVG F AVGVSTA". The reverse features Ceres holding corn-ears and a torch, accompanied by the inscription "CERES AVGVST S C".
