Historical context

Vespasian ruled as Roman emperor from 69 to 79, establishing the Flavian dynasty after emerging victorious from the civil conflicts of the Year of the Four Emperors. This silver denarius, produced at Rome, features his younger son Domitian, who occupied a largely ceremonial role during the reigns of Vespasian and Titus before eventually succeeding to the imperial throne in 81. The denarius served as the standard silver denomination of the Roman monetary system from around 211 BC.
