Historical context

Vespasian was Roman emperor from 69 to 79 and founded the Flavian dynasty following the civil conflicts of the Year of the Four Emperors. Before his accession, he rose to prominence through his military career, which included leading the suppression of the Jewish rebellion of 66–70. The Roman legions of Egypt and Judaea proclaimed him emperor in July 69, leading to the defeat of Vitellius.

This bronze as was struck at the mint of Lugdunum under Vespasian's authority. The obverse bears the emperor's laureate portrait and names him as "IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG COS VIII P P". The reverse depicts Judaea seated in mourning beneath a palm tree alongside captured arms, accompanied by the inscription "IVDAEA CAPTA S C", commemorating the outcome of the campaign against the Jewish rebellion.
