Historical context
Vespasian ruled as Roman emperor from 69 to 79, establishing the Flavian dynasty after the civil conflict of the Year of the Four Emperors. He had achieved prominence through his military career, having served during the Roman invasion of Britain and later leading the suppression of the Jewish rebellion between 66 and 70 before his legions proclaimed him emperor in 69.
Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze sestertius features an obverse legend naming the emperor as "IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M TR P P P COS III". Its reverse depicts the emperor in military attire alongside Judaea seated beneath a palm tree, accompanied by the inscription "IVDAEA CAPTA S C". This design relates to the suppression of the Jewish rebellion, a campaign that concluded successfully and enabled Vespasian to reform the imperial financial system.
