Historical context

Vespasian was Roman emperor from 69 to 79 and founded the Flavian dynasty following the civil conflicts of the Year of the Four Emperors. Before becoming emperor, he rose to prominence through his military service, which included serving as legate of Legio II Augusta during the invasion of Britain in 43 and leading the suppression of the Jewish rebellion between 66 and 70.

This bronze as was struck at Rome under Vespasian's imperial authority. The coin bears the obverse title "IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG COS III". Its reverse design and inscription "IVDEA CAPTA S C", showing a draped and veiled Judaea seated in mourning beneath a palm tree beside captured arms, refers to the Roman campaign and the successful conclusion of the war in Judaea.
