Historical context

Hadrian ruled as Roman emperor from 117 to 138, adopting the imperial form of address Imperator Caesar Traianus Hadrianus Augustus. A member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, he succeeded Trajan, whose grandniece Vibia Sabina he had married earlier in his career. Hadrian abandoned Trajan's expansionist policies, focusing instead on developing stable, defensible borders and seeking the unification of the Roman Empire's disparate peoples.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver coinage in use from c. 211 BC until the third century AD. The obverse displays the emperor's laureate portrait, accompanied by the inscription "IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG". The reverse depicts Concordia seated on a throne, holding a patera, resting upon a figure of Spes, and accompanied by a cornucopia, framed by the legends "P M TR P COS II" and "CONCORD".
