Historical context
Hadrian ruled as Roman emperor from 117 to 138, adopting the official imperial address Imperator Caesar Traianus Hadrianus Augustus. A member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, he succeeded Trajan, having previously married Trajan's grandniece, Vibia Sabina. Soon after taking power, Hadrian departed from earlier expansionist strategies to concentrate on stable frontiers and imperial administration, later travelling extensively across the empire's provinces.
Struck at Rome, this silver coin is a denarius, which served as the standard Roman silver denomination following its introduction during the Second Punic War. The obverse features the emperor's portrait alongside the legend "IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG", reflecting his adopted imperial title. The reverse depicts Fortuna seated with a rudder and cornucopia, accompanied by the inscription "P M TR P COS II" and the exergue mark "FORT RED".
