Historical context

His formal imperial title was Imperator Caesar Traianus Hadrianus Augustus. Hadrian had married Trajan's grandniece, Vibia Sabina, and his succession as emperor was probably supported by Trajan's wife Pompeia Plotina.

Struck at Rome, this silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver currency that circulated from circa 211 BC until the third century. The obverse carries the imperial legend "IMP CAES TRAIAN HADRIAN OPT AVG GER DAC", while the reverse bears the titles "PARTHIC DIVI TRAIAN AVG F P M TR P COS P P" alongside an exergue reading "CONCORD". The reverse imagery displays Concordia seated on a throne, holding a patera and resting upon a figure of Spes, with a cornucopia beneath the throne.
