Historical context

Hadrian ruled the Roman Empire from 117 to 138 as a member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Departing from the expansionist policies of his predecessor Trajan, Hadrian focused his administration on developing stable, defensible frontiers and unifying the disparate subjects across the empire. He governed actively by visiting almost every Roman province and intervened directly in provincial governance, military matters, and extensive building projects throughout the imperial territories.

The obverse presents Hadrian with the legend "HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P". The reverse depicts the emperor advancing with a scroll, followed by three soldiers, accompanied by the exergual legend "// DISCIPLINA / AVG".
