Historical context

This gold coin was struck at the mint of Rome under the authority of Hadrian, who ruled as Roman emperor from 117 to 138. A member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, Hadrian had married Vibia Sabina, the grandniece of the emperor Trajan, early in his political career.

Struck as an aureus, the piece belongs to the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome, standard in the imperial period and originally valued at 25 silver denarii or 100 sestertii. The obverse features Sabina's portrait accompanied by the legend "SABINA AVGVSTA". The reverse displays the goddess Juno holding a patera and sceptre, accompanied by a peacock, under the legend "IVNONI REGINAE".
