Historical context

Hadrian ruled as Roman emperor from 117 to 138 as a member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Their marriage, which was unhappy and childless, had likely been promoted alongside his imperial succession by Trajan's wife, Pompeia Plotina. This silver coinage was issued under Hadrian's imperial authority from the mint of Rome.

Struck as a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination since the Second Punic War, the piece portrays Hadrian's wife alongside the obverse legend "SABINA AVGVSTA". The reverse depicts Venus holding an apple and arranging her drapery, accompanied by the inscription "VENERI GENETRICI".
