Historical context

Nerva served as Roman emperor from AD 96 until his death on 27 January 98. Declared emperor by the Roman Senate after the assassination of Domitian on 18 September 96, he ruled for barely fifteen months. During his reign, Nerva vowed to restore liberties that had been curtailed under the autocratic government of his predecessor.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze as directly engages with these political commitments. The reverse design depicts Libertas, draped and standing left while holding a pileus and a short sceptre, accompanied by the legend "LIBERTAS PVBLICA S C". This imagery explicitly evokes public liberty, aligning with Nerva's pledges following the end of the Flavian dynasty. The obverse presents the laureate head of the emperor alongside his imperial titles, recorded in the legend "IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P II COS III P P".
