Historical context

Nerva served as Roman emperor from AD 96 to 98, following a career under Nero and the Flavian dynasty. Declared emperor by the Roman Senate on 18 September 96 after the assassination of Domitian, he pledged to restore liberties curtailed under Domitian's autocratic rule. His fifteen-month reign concluded with his death on 27 January 98.

This bronze as was struck under Nerva's authority at an uncertain mint within the Roman Empire. The coin features the deified first emperor on the obverse, showing the bare head of Divus Augustus accompanied by the legend "DIVVS AVGVSTVS". The reverse depicts an altar with a paneled door, encircled by the inscription "IMP NERVA CAES AVG REST S C".
