Historical context

Nerva ruled as Roman emperor from AD 96 to 98, taking office at nearly sixty-six years of age after the assassination of Domitian on 18 September 96. Declared emperor by the Roman Senate, he had previously served under Nero and the Flavian emperors. His brief reign was troubled by financial difficulties and challenges in asserting control over the Roman army, culminating in a revolt by the Praetorian Guard in October 97.

Struck at the Rome mint, this gold aureus represents the primary gold denomination of the Roman Empire, which was standardised during the imperial era and valued at twenty-five silver denarii. The coin features the reverse legend "CONCORDIA EXERCITVVM" alongside clasped hands, reflecting the theme of harmony within the military during a period when the imperial administration faced severe unrest and resistance from the army.
