Historical context

Nerva served as Roman emperor from AD 96 to 98, assuming office at nearly sixty-six years of age following the assassination of Domitian. Declared emperor by the Roman Senate, he had previously served under Nero and held consulships under the Flavian emperors Vespasian and Domitian. His brief reign of fifteen months was characterised by financial problems and difficulties in asserting authority over the Roman military.

The obverse carries the imperial portrait and titles with the legend "IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS III P P". On the reverse, clasped hands are paired with the inscription "CONCORDIA EXERCITVVM", evoking the harmony of the armed forces during a reign marked by military tensions, including a revolt by the Praetorian Guard in October 97.
