Historical context
Nerva served as Roman emperor from AD 96 to 98, assuming office after Domitian was assassinated on 18 September 96 and the Roman Senate declared him emperor. His brief fifteen-month reign was troubled by financial difficulties and an inability to assert authority over the Roman army, leading to a revolt by the Praetorian Guard in October 97 that forced him to adopt Trajan as his successor.
This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome. The reverse design features clasped hands holding an aquila set on a prow, accompanied by the legend "CONCORDIA EXERCITVVM", while the obverse presents the emperor's portrait alongside his titles in the legend "IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS III P P".
