Historical context
Nerva served as Roman emperor from AD 96 to 98, coming to power at nearly sixty-six years of age following the assassination of Domitian. Declared emperor by the Roman Senate, he had previously held consulships under Vespasian and Domitian. His brief administration in Rome was troubled by financial difficulties and tensions with the military, concluding with his death in January 98 after a reign of barely fifteen months.
Struck at Rome, this silver denarius formed part of the standard silver coinage that circulated across the Roman world from around 211 BC into the third century AD. The obverse features the laureate portrait of the emperor alongside the imperial titles in the legend "IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS III P P". The reverse depicts a draped figure of Fortuna seated left with corn-ears and a sceptre, paired with the legend "FORTVNA P R".
