Historical context

Nerva served as Roman emperor from AD 96 to 98, assuming power at nearly sixty-six years of age following the assassination of Domitian. Declared emperor by the Roman Senate, he presided over a brief reign of fifteen months during which he sought to restore liberties curtailed under Domitian. Facing financial difficulties and unrest from the Praetorian Guard, he adopted Trajan as his successor before dying in January 98.

Struck at Rome, this silver denarius formed part of the standard silver coinage of the Roman Empire, a denomination first introduced during the Second Punic War. The coin carries an obverse portrait of the emperor accompanied by the titles "IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS III P P". The reverse features Justitia seated with a sceptre and branch, paired with the legend "IVSTITIA AVGVST".
