Historical context

Nerva served as Roman emperor from AD 96 to 98, coming to power after a lifetime of imperial service under Nero and the Flavian dynasty. Declared emperor by the Roman Senate following the assassination of Domitian on 18 September 96, he ruled for barely fifteen months. During his brief reign, he vowed to restore liberties curtailed under Domitian, before dying of natural causes on 27 January 98.

Struck at the Rome mint, this piece represents the standard Roman silver coin of the era. The obverse features the laureate head of the emperor accompanied by the inscription "IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR POT", while the reverse depicts priestly implements comprising a simpulum, sprinkler, ewer, and lituus, framed by the legend "COS III PATER PATRIAE".
