Historical context

Nerva ruled the Roman Empire from AD 96 to 98, having been declared emperor by the Roman Senate after the assassination of Domitian on 18 September 96. His brief reign of barely fifteen months was marked by financial difficulties and tensions with the military, eventually leading him to adopt Trajan as his successor in October 97 before dying on 27 January 98.

Struck at Rome, this silver piece belongs to the denarius denomination, which served as the standard Roman silver coin from circa 211 BC until the third century AD. The obverse bears the emperor's portrait with the imperial titulature "IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P II COS III P P", while the reverse depicts Fortuna holding a rudder and cornucopiae, accompanied by the inscription "FORTVNA AVGVST".
