Historical context

Nerva served within the imperial administration under Nero and the Flavian dynasty, holding consulships in 71 and 90. Following the assassination of Domitian on 18 September 96, the Roman Senate declared Nerva emperor. His brief reign lasted until his death on 27 January 98, during which he vowed to restore liberties curtailed under Domitian and established the succession by adopting Trajan.

Struck at the Rome mint, this piece is an aureus, the primary gold coin of ancient Rome that was standardised during the Empire and originally valued at 25 silver denarii or 100 sestertii. The obverse features the laureate head of the emperor alongside the inscription "IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P II COS III P P". The reverse depicts Salus seated on a throne, holding two corn-ears downwards, accompanied by the legend "SALVS PVBLICA".
