Historical context

Nerva served as Roman emperor between AD 96 and 98, assuming power at the age of nearly sixty-six following the assassination of Domitian. Declared emperor by the Roman Senate, he vowed to restore liberties curtailed under his predecessor. His brief fifteen-month reign faced financial difficulties and military pressure, culminating in a Praetorian Guard revolt in October 97 that led him to adopt Trajan as his successor.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver quinarius represents a denomination valued at half a denarius, which was produced sporadically by imperial authorities until the third century. The coin features the laureate head of Nerva accompanied by the obverse inscription IMP NERVA CAES AVG GERM P M TR P II. The reverse depicts Victory advancing to the right with a wreath and palm, accompanied by the legend IMP II COS IIII P P.
