Historical context

Nerva served as Roman emperor from AD 96 to 98, assuming power after Domitian was assassinated in a palace conspiracy on 18 September 96. Declared emperor by the Roman Senate, he had previously held consulships under the Flavian dynasty. His brief reign of fifteen months was troubled by financial difficulties and challenges in asserting authority over the Roman army, culminating in a Praetorian Guard revolt in October 97 that led him to adopt Trajan as heir.

This silver denarius was struck at the Rome mint under Nerva's imperial authority. The piece carries the obverse legend "IMP NERVA CAES AVG GERM P M TR P II" alongside his laureate portrait, while the reverse depicts clasped hands accompanied by the inscription "IMP II COS IIII P P".
