Historical context

Nerva served as Roman emperor from AD 96 to 98, assuming power at nearly sixty-six years of age following the assassination of Domitian on 18 September 96. Declared emperor by the Roman Senate, he had previously held consulships under Vespasian and Domitian. His brief administration sought to restore liberties curtailed under Domitian, though it faced financial difficulties and unrest from the Praetorian Guard.

This bronze as was struck under Nerva's authority at the Rome mint. Its obverse legend titles him with "IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS II P P", reflecting his second consulship. The reverse bears the inscription "FORTVNA AVGVST S C" and depicts Fortuna draped and standing left, holding a cornucopiae in her left hand and a rudder set on the ground in her right hand.
