Historical context

Struck at the Rome mint, this gold aureus represented the primary gold denomination of ancient Rome, standardised under the Empire at an exchange value of twenty-five silver denarii. The coin bears the obverse titles "IMP NERVA CAES AVG PM TR P COS II P P" alongside an image of the emperor. The reverse depicts Libertas with the legend "LIBERTAS PVBLICA", reflecting Nerva's imperial vow to restore liberties that had been curtailed under the autocratic rule of Domitian.
