Historical context
Nerva served in the imperial entourage under Nero and attained consulships under Vespasian and Domitian before being declared Roman emperor by the Senate on 18 September 96. His brief reign lasted until his death on 27 January 98. Upon taking office, Nerva vowed to restore liberties that had been curtailed under Domitian, though his administration encountered financial difficulties and unrest from the Praetorian Guard.
This bronze sestertius was produced at the mint of Rome. In imperial Roman currency, the sestertius served as a large denomination evaluated at one quarter of a denarius, or two and a half asses, providing a medium useful for commerce. The coin's obverse bears Nerva's laureate head with the legend "IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS III P P", whilst the reverse depicts a palm-tree alongside the legend "FISCI IVDAICI CALVMNIA SVBLATA S C".
