Historical context

Nerva served as Roman emperor from AD 96 to 98, assuming office at nearly sixty-six years of age following the assassination of Domitian on 18 September 96. Declared emperor by the Roman Senate, he had previously held imperial roles under Nero and the Flavian emperors. His brief reign lasted barely fifteen months, during which he aimed to restore liberties curtailed under Domitian, before dying on 27 January 98.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze as belongs to Nerva's administration within the Roman Empire. The obverse features the laureate head of Nerva accompanied by the legend "IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P II COS III P P", indicating his imperial titles, tribunician power, and third consulship. The reverse displays the legend "AEQVITAS AVGVST S C" alongside a draped depiction of Aequitas standing left, holding scales and a cornucopiae.
