Historical context

Trajan was Roman emperor from 98 to 117 and the second ruler of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Formerly a governor of Germania and Pannonia who had distinguished himself in campaigns against Germanic tribes, he was adopted as heir by the emperor Nerva following a revolt by the Praetorian Guard. As emperor, Trajan presided over major military expansions and large-scale building works in Rome, where this piece was struck.

Struck in silver at the Rome mint, this coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination introduced during the Second Punic War. The obverse presents a laureate portrait of the emperor with the imperial titles recorded as "IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG GERM", acknowledging his adoption by Nerva and his Germanic honours. The reverse depicts a draped figure of Victory seated without a back, holding a patera and a palm, accompanied by the legend "PONT MAX TR POT COS II".
