Historical context

Trajan reigned as Roman emperor from 98 to 117, during the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. A successful soldier-emperor, he expanded the frontiers of the Roman Empire through the annexation of Dacia and Nabataea, as well as campaigns against Parthia. During his rule, he was granted the formal title of optimus princeps, meaning 'the best ruler', by the Roman Senate.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver piece is a denarius, which functioned as the standard Roman silver coin from around 211 BC into the third century. The obverse carries the legend "IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS VI P P", noting Trajan's titles.
