Historical context

Struck at Rome, this silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination originally introduced circa 211 BC during the Second Punic War. The coin carries the obverse legend "IMP TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS VI P P" alongside a laureate bust of the emperor. The reverse displays a standing genius holding a patera and corn-ears, accompanied by the inscription "S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI", which directly invokes the senatorial title bestowed upon Trajan.
