Historical context

Trajan reigned as Roman emperor from 98 to 117, succeeding his adoptive father Nerva as the second of the Five Good Emperors in the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Struck at the mint of Rome, imperial coinage under Trajan reflected his official titles as a soldier-emperor who had distinguished himself in military campaigns along the Germanic frontier prior to his accession.

This silver denarius formed part of the standard Roman silver currency, an established denomination originally introduced during the Second Punic War circa 211 BC.
