Historical context

Trajan was Roman emperor from 98 to 117, having been adopted as heir and successor by Nerva after distinguishing himself in military campaigns. Remembered as a soldier-emperor of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, Trajan presided over major military expansion, during which he annexed Dacia and Nabataea and expanded the Roman Empire to its maximum territorial extent. The Roman Senate awarded him the title of optimus princeps, meaning 'the best ruler'.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze as connects Trajan's imperial titles with his campaigns in Dacia. The obverse legend titles him "IMP CAES NERVAE TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS V P P", reflecting his victories and position. On the reverse, Roma is depicted in military dress holding Victory and a spear, while a Dacian kneels at her feet, accompanied by the inscription "S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI S C".
