Historical context

Trajan served as Roman emperor from 98 to 117, succeeding Nerva as part of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. A soldier-emperor who presided over extensive military expansion, Trajan annexed territories including Dacia, Nabataea, Armenia, Mesopotamia, and Assyria.

This bronze sestertius was produced at the mint of Rome. In imperial Roman commerce, the sestertius served as a large denomination valued at two and a half asses or one quarter of a denarius. The reverse iconography shows Pax holding a branch and cornucopiae while treading down a Dacian, referencing the Roman subjugation of Dacia under Trajan. The legends record Trajan's official imperial titulature as "IMP CAES NERVAE TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS V P P" and the senatorial dedication "S P Q R OPTIMO PRINCIPI S C".
