Historical context

Trajan served as Roman emperor from 98 to 117, reigning as the second of the Five Good Emperors within the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Formerly a distinguished general and provincial governor under Domitian, he had been adopted as heir by Emperor Nerva following unrest among the Praetorian Guard.

Struck at the Rome mint, this silver piece belongs to the denarius denomination, which functioned as the standard Roman silver coin from circa 211 BC until the reign of Gordian III. The obverse depicts Trajan with the legend "IMP CAES NERVA TRAIAN AVG GERM", reflecting his imperial titles and adoption by Nerva. On the reverse, the coin portrays Pax holding an upright branch and a cornucopiae, accompanied by the legend "P M TR P COS II P P".
