Historical context

Trajan reigned as Roman emperor from 98 to 117 and was remembered as the second of the Five Good Emperors of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. A soldier-emperor who presided over one of the greatest military expansions in Roman history, his campaigns culminated in conflicts against Dacia and the Parthian Empire, alongside the formal annexation of new territories.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this bronze sestertius features legends commemorating Trajan's titles, including "PARTHICO" and "OPTIMO", the latter reflecting the honorific optimus princeps awarded to him by the Roman Senate. The reverse design, inscribed "REGNA ADSIGNATA S C", depicts the emperor in military dress seated upon a platform alongside a prefect and a soldier, receiving three standing kings.
