Historical context

Trajan was Roman emperor from 98 to 117, reigning as the second of the Five Good Emperors of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. A successful soldier-emperor who expanded the empire to its maximum territorial extent, he oversaw major military conquests including the annexation of Dacia and Nabataea.

Struck at the Rome mint, this bronze coin is a dupondius, a denomination valued at two asses, half of a sestertius, or one-eighth of a denarius during the imperial era. At the height of the empire, a dupondius could purchase approximately a loaf of bread or a sextarius of wine. Following a practice established under Nero in 66 AD, the dupondius was distinguished from the similarly sized as by presenting the emperor wearing a radiate crown. The obverse legend records his titles, including OPTIMO, while the reverse depicts Felicitas with a caduceus and cornucopiae, accompanied by the legend SENATVS POPVLVSQVE ROMANVS S C.
