Historical context

Trajan was Roman emperor from 98 to 117, ruling as the second monarch of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. A soldier-emperor who governed during an era of significant military expansion, he annexed territories including Dacia and was named optimus princeps by the Roman Senate. This silver denarius was struck at the mint of Rome under Trajan's authority as part of the coinage of the Roman Empire.

The denarius served as the standard Roman silver coin from its introduction during the Second Punic War circa 211 BC until the third century AD. This restored issue features the obverse legend "MARCELLINVS" beside the head of Marcus Claudius Marcellus, accompanied by a triskelis. The reverse depicts Marcellus consecrating Gaulish spoils within the temple of Jupiter Feretrius, surrounded by the legend "IMP CAES TRAIAN AVG GER DAC P P REST MARCELLVS COS QVINQ".
