Historical context

Antoninus Pius served as Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, having been adopted as son and successor by Hadrian shortly before Hadrian's death. As the fourth ruler of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, he governed an empire marked by internal peace, sound administration, and legal reforms. Among his family arrangements, Antoninus adopted Marcus Aurelius, who would eventually succeed him as co-emperor alongside Lucius Verus following Antoninus's death in 161.

Struck at the mint of Rome under the authority of Antoninus Pius, this bronze as portrays Marcus Aurelius on the obverse accompanied by the legend "AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F COS". The reverse pairs the legend "PIETAS AVG S C" with an arrangement of priestly emblems, depicting a knife, sprinkler, jug, lituus, and simpulum.
