Historical context

Antoninus Pius governed the Roman Empire from 138 to 161 as one of the Five Good Emperors of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty. Having been adopted by Hadrian in 138, Antoninus in turn adopted Marcus Aurelius as his prospective successor. In 145, Marcus Aurelius married Faustina the Younger, the youngest daughter of Antoninus Pius and Faustina the Elder. Marcus subsequently served as consul in 140, 145, and 161, before acceding to the imperial throne alongside Lucius Verus upon Antoninus's death.
