Historical context

Antoninus Pius served as Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, having been adopted as son and successor by Emperor Hadrian shortly before Hadrian's death. Antoninus was the fourth of the Five Good Emperors from the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, presiding over a notably peaceful period across the Empire. Upon his death in AD 161, Antoninus was succeeded jointly by his adopted sons, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, who became co-emperors.

This bronze as was issued at the mint of Rome under the authority of Antoninus Pius for Marcus Aurelius as Caesar. The reverse design presents Pietas draped and standing, holding up her right hand and carrying a box at her side, accompanied by a child at her feet, and bears the inscription TR POT III COS II PIETAS S C.
