Historical context

Antoninus Pius was Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, reigning as the fourth ruler of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty following his adoption by Hadrian. Known for a peaceful administration with no major revolts, he eventually died of illness in 161 and was succeeded by his adopted sons, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus, who ruled as co-emperors.

This bronze as was struck at the mint of Rome under the authority of Antoninus Pius. The reverse carries the legend TR POT VI COS II S C and portrays the helmeted, draped figure of Minerva standing left, holding Victory while resting her hand on a round shield with a spear resting against her arm.
