Historical context

Antoninus Pius was Roman emperor from AD 138 to 161, having been adopted by Hadrian as his son and successor shortly before Hadrian's death. The fourth of the Five Good Emperors from the Nerva–Antonine dynasty, he acquired the cognomen Pius following his accession. His administration of the Roman Empire was marked by a peaceful state without major revolts or military incursions, leaving a substantial treasury surplus upon his death.

Struck at the mint of Rome, this silver coin is a denarius, the standard Roman silver denomination originally introduced during the Second Punic War circa 211 BC. The obverse features Antoninus Pius alongside the legend "ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XI", marking his eleventh year of tribunician power. The reverse bears the legend "COS IIII", referencing his fourth consulship, and depicts the personification Salus draped and holding a rudder set on a globe, while feeding a snake coiled around an altar with a patera.
